The most frequently asked question of my life as an atheist was probably “what does it mean to be atheist?” I know, that it is hard to, almost struggling work to, imagine life without god or gods. For those whom didn’t have chance, Christianity offers redemption from sins. But what about atheism? Will it offer any psychological rest bed? Wouldn’t it make you disgusted about whole world? What does it mean to be atheist?
Answer is, rather simple. It is the way it is. Yes, believing in afterlife and meeting again with dearly friend and family would be comforting. But what about chance of being lost? What about chance of not going to heaven? What about a chance, which is kind of odd, that your friend or family wasn’t really human? Maybe they could have been angel, or messenger from god. What about all the chances? Does the fact after your death having all the deserved prize for eternity, not working but resting, ETERNALLY, comfort you? Well…. To be honest, it is rather hard to believe Christians tend to agree with capitalism, instead of socialism.
In other words, even there could be god and afterlife, that won’t affect your life, right now, right this present. Will god appear to you one day, and get you free insurance or pathway to successful life? No. At least from my understanding, you suppose to live on your own. You are his temple, glorifying his work by having successful life than the others. Atheism, does not. They only say, “God is not needed to live on this earth.” Almost same thing as, we need to terra-form Mars to live there. Does it sound odd to you? Once again, it is almost identical as saying “if you water the grass, it will grow.” You don’t need fairy or god of grass to grow your backyard grass field.
When I was a little boy, I did go to church regularly. It wasn’t so long, about a month or two. But it wasn’t comforting me anything, but nothing, inside there. Pastors and church members arguably said, “too late, if you have come earlier, you could have gone to heaven much easier.” Accepting the Christ and read bible every day was what all they asked. Yes, It doesn’t sound hard and scary, but rather helpful hand of neighbors. But back then, still now it is, their claim horrified me from the back of my mind, and led me to run away from it. Is it because the church was somehow corrupted, or misled the child? No, answer is no. At least, they had their bibles in their hand.
Nihilism, they call it, somehow suited concept for Christians to understand atheism. But I must argue back, nihilism has nothing to do with atheism. Atheism is like…. math. Simple math. Calculation from 1+1 equals to 2. It portrays nothing, but simply 1+1=2. If it really wanted to prove or show something, it would rather say “because god of math gives us divine rule, 1+1 must equal to something twice bigger than 1… and etc. & etc.” It is simple. simple as possible is what atheism is. Do I need Santa Clause to get Christmas present? Well…. apparently I haven’t got any present from him, manufactured by elves at north pole, transported with burning Rudolf. (WAIT, HAVE YOU?!)
Being atheist is not something that is cooler or better. (Might be better for mental health, though) Why should someone ever care about things won’t affect or intercept your life? Why should I care about fairies in my backyard growing grass in perfect stealth with water I paid? Oh, and yes, it is true. Life is cruel. -R
